STAKEHOLDERS’ WORKSHOP TO FOLLOW UP ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UPR RECOMMENDATIONS

On 12th June 2018 at Lemigo Hotel, the Ministry of Justice as a lead institution in the Universal Periodic Review cycle organised a one day stakeholders’ workshop to follow on the status of implementation of the 50 UPR recommendations accepted by Rwanda.

The main objective of the workshop is to bring together key government institutions that, based on the UPR implementation roadmap, are directly involved in the implementation of the UPR recommendations to assess the status of the implementation since the mid-term review.

The head of International Justice and Judicial Cooperation, Mrs Umurungi Providence said that though most of the recommendations had been worked on successfully, there were some that required legal framework, which she says is currently being worked on tirelessly. “We are confident that we will deliver. We have gone beyond 50 per cent. When it comes to rights to finance, education, health and the general social welfare of the local community, we are doing well but we strive to improve every day.” She said.

Remember that on November 4th, 2015, Rwanda appeared Rights Council UPR Working Group in Geneva for the second cycle of the Rwanda’s Universal Periodic Review. During the review, the Government of Rwanda accepted to implement 50 recommendations given by the Human Right Council and this was considered an exceptional acceptance rate which demonstrated Rwanda’s commitment towards genuine compliance with International Human Rights obligations.  The report on these 50 recommendations will be submitted in November 2020.
