Students from Huron College at University of Western Ontario visited the Ministry of Justice
On Thursday 20th February 2020, the Minister of Justice /Attorney General, Busingye Johnston received the delegation of student from Huron College at University of Western Ontario who was in the Country for 8-day study visit. The delegation learnt about Rwanda's experience with transitional justice.
Speaking to the delegation, Minister Busingye Johnston elaborated on the origin and development of Gacaca courts, how the idea came into action, operationalization of the courts, the achievements and what they have contributed to Rwandans. “In 10 years, Gacaca Courts tried 1,958,634 Genocide related cases. This hugely contributed to the eradication of the culture of impunity and dispensation of justice to the victims.” Busingye said.
He further told the visitors that the existence of Gacaca Courts showed the ability and willingness of Rwandans to manage their own conflicts and propose home grown solutions.
