Transparency and accountable governance are important factors in the fight against corruption
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Republic of Rwanda, Busingye Johnston, this Wednesday 28th November 2018, opened the sixth African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) General Assembly which was bringing together members from over 40 countries on the continent. The Assembly is running under the theme: “The Role of the Ombudsman/Mediators in Promoting Transparency and Accountable Governance in Africa”.
While addressing to the participants, Minister Busingye said that this theme correlates with the dedication of the year 2018 by the African Union to “Winning the fight against corruption as sustainable path to Africa’s transformation”.
“Transparency and accountable governance are important factors in the fight against corruption. Without information about rights and responsibilities, requirements and timeframe to deliver a service, the relationships between providers and consumers of public services become unclear and conflictual. Once citizens have information and they know what is happening, they become empowered. As Ombudsman/Mediators, you stand in that critical space to ensure access to information in oversight capacity.” Minister emphasized
